Artex Removal in Chatham

Artex removal in Chatham for swirled and stippled ceilings. Skimmed over or taken off, with older coatings tested first. Flat ceilings ready for paint, with free quotes across Medway.

Why People Remove Artex

Textured ceilings date a room more than almost anything else. They collect dust, make painting awkward and are hard to patch after a leak or a new light fitting. A flat white ceiling makes the whole room look bigger and cleaner.

More Information

Artex and Asbestos

Textured coatings put up before the mid 1980s can contain small amounts of asbestos. It is not dangerous while it is left alone and sealed, but sanding or scraping it is a real risk. If the age is uncertain, it should be tested before anyone touches it.

Skim Over or Take It Off

Shallow patterns can be knocked back and skimmed over, which is quicker and less mess. Deep peaks and swirls usually need removing or overboarding first, or the finish will telegraph through. We look at the ceiling and tell you which route suits it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is artex on my Chatham ceiling dangerous?

Left alone and painted, a textured ceiling is not a risk. The concern is disturbing older coatings by sanding or scraping, which can release fibres. Anything applied before the mid 1980s should be tested before work starts. Testing is quick and inexpensive.

Can you cover artex instead of removing it?

Yes. Overboarding fixes plasterboard straight over the textured ceiling and the new board is then skimmed. It avoids disturbing the old coating altogether and gives a flat finish. It drops the ceiling height by a few millimetres, which is rarely noticeable.

How long does artex removal take in a Chatham home?

A single ceiling is often a day to a day and a half including skimming. Overboarding is usually quicker than taking a heavy texture off. Allow around four to seven days drying before you paint, starting with a watered down mist coat.
